I recently made some custom pumpkins for Everyday with Rachael Ray and they are finally on the stands! They are sort of crazy but hilarious.

The pumpkin burger made entirely of candy and a cocoa crispy treat patty.

Chalkboard paint and chalk - my personal favorite.

Drawn silhouette, wild painted faux bois, stenciled gold polka dots and some fun solids.

I just saw that the chalkboard pumpkins were featured on Poppytalk today, which is incredibly fun.

Here are two of the costumes from a Halloween DIY story I did for Woman's Day, also on the stands now! This is really something for the parent who is willing to sacrifice comfort for being the life of the party. Plus, when baby gets tired, you can take off your empire state building and carry the baby home in the box! You can find all the DIY instructions here for this and other costumes I worked on with my partner in craft, Kristine Trevino.

I also spotted my dog Gigi is back on the Rachael Ray site in the Elvis costume I made for the magazine a couple years ago. You would not believe the quantity of snacks we went through for that shoot. She's a good girl!

If you don't already know UPPERCASE Magazine, you should check it out right now! This beauty of an art and design magazine comes from our Northern neighbor, Canada and once you hold an issue in your hands, there's no turning back! I first came upon it at my friend Meg Metz's beautiful shop Modern Love in Frenchtown, NJ. After I read one issue, I knew I had found my people.

Well, I just had the pleasure of seeing my work featured on their blog today! Thanks UPPERCASE!

Wanderlust: Part 1

I just spent the past two months packing up my eight years of living in Brooklyn, NY and drove across the country with my fiance and our dog (in a car packed to the brim with camping gear, computers, water jugs and vegan snacks - to survive Middle America). We camped our way across the nation and just moved into our new home in Portland, Oregon. More on that later.

The road trip itself was an adventure. We saw old ghost towns with incredible signage, beautiful vistas, and lots of novelty statues (including the World's Largest Bison and a big mouse gnawing on a wedge of cheese - Wisconsin of course). The greatest surprise along our way was along a long stretch of Highway I-94 in North Dakota (near Regent, ND). We came upon the World's Largest Scrap Metal Sculpture (according to Guiness). It was striking to see it coming up in the distance and really beautiful up close. There is a series of them along the Enchanted Highway but this one is called 'Geese in Flight'. I was really taken by it, especially when it looms overhead as you walk around it. Seeing a few random bolts and scraps of metal on the ground wasn't the greatest feeling but we made it out okay! I wish we could have seen the rest of the Enchanted Highway but we had the Oregon Trail ahead of us!

This little beauty is worth a watch. I wish it were two hours long, that's how much I love seeing what kinds of pens, brushes and ink other artists use. NERD ALERT. Mine are Ecoline watercolor inks and Daler Rowney Acrylic Artists ink with the teeny-tiniest pen nibs I can find!

I recently saw the kind of funny movie It's Kind of a Funny Story and was struck by the beautiful instrumental cover of The Pixies' song "Where is My Mind?". I did some light detective work (aka google) today and found the pianist behind it, Maxence Cyrin. Night at the Guggenheim

This past week my beau and I attended the Youtube Play awards at the Guggenheim as our friend James Braithwaite was one of 25 honored winners (out of over 25,000 submissions!). The show featured creative shorts on Youtube and the event didn't disappoint! Each screening was paired with a live musical performance and the interior of the Guggenheim was covered in projections. It was pretty stunning!

Bounty of the Bowerbird

Bowerbirds are incredible creatures. My mom has always said you should never marry a man with design ideas (in hopes of getting to have the ideas all to yourself), yet these guys would seem the exception to the rule! The males have a sharp eye for design, composition and a penchant for blue, all in hopes of winning the ladybird after their own heart. Then again, once they court their lady bowerbird, she has to build the nest and raise the babies herself. Lesson to the ladies: don't go after the flashy guys! They'll just start showing off for someone else. Find the bird with a good book collection.

I recently discovered the beautiful, mysterious and whimsical work of French photographer Estelle Hanania. The images below are from two series 'Demoniac Babble' and 'Parking Lot Hydra', both documenting men in costume at carnivals. In her own words, "I'm attracted by a feeling of disorientation and excitement that you can find in these gatherings and costumed traditions... I love this kind of situation where everything gets confused and uncertain, but you still can define the most familiar shape which is the human figure, vanishing."

Dalton Ghetti

I am a fan of all things tiny and artist Dalton Ghetti has taken miniature to a whole new level. Ghetti started carving bark as a kid, then moved on to soap and chalk before settling on pencil graphite. He uses only three tools for his teeny-tiny sculptures: a sewing needle, an exacto and a carpenter's pencil. Without the use of a magnifying glass he carves these incredible Lilliputian works of art.

Amazing! La Cueva de Los Cristales

I know sci-fi tries to tell us otherwise, but I think we definitely lucked out with this planet of ours. It's the coolest! Have you ever seen images of crystal caves? Not just hippie-dippie street vendor crystals meant to re-align your chakras while simultaneously emptying your wallet. Seriously awe inspiring, giant crystals, people!

Here are pictures (from our brainy friends over at National Geographic) of the most incredible crystal cave discovered as of yet. It took hundreds of thousands of years to grow these crystals and some are as tall as 36 feet! Incredibly, these aren't photoshopped. Behold!! La Cueva de los Cristales!

p.s. By the way, I love that everyone in the pictures looks like a sort of bored construction worker while they are probably some sort of genius / scientist just trying to look cool.

Inspiration Station: The Mighty Eyjafjallajökull

Iceland has been the object of my affection for many years. The natural beauty there is wild, vivid and unparalleled. Here is a beautiful time-lapse film of (the icelandic volcano with an ice-cap hat) Eyjafjallajökull by filmmaker Sean Stiegemeier. This is the infamous volcano that was getting so much bad press due to the wild amounts of ash whirling around the planet and lots of stranded travelers. But if you take a moment to appreciate it for what it is, a mountain with smoke and lava pouring out of it while our earth's plates shift, it's pretty incredible.

I saw this film a couple months ago but I think about it all the time so figured I ought to share it. The soundtrack is a beautiful and perfectly apt song by the Icelandic singer Jonsi (of Sigur Ros). It feels like that song was meant to score a volcano. See for yourself.

Ben Javens

I recently came across the work of English illustrator Ben Javens. It was an unlikely spot but I was stopped in my tracks while buying soymilk at the market. Ben was hired to completely redesign 8th Continent soymilk packaging and man, oh man, it worked! I wish everything in my fridge was this awesome!

He has a definite 60s influence but there's something all his own. He has a great palette and clean design but manages to keep the handmade quality in each print. I really love his work so here are a few more for you to enjoy!

Hello there,

I recently missed the one night only showing of 'The Tale of the Fox' (Le Roman de Renard) at BAM. It's a famous stop motion film from the 1930s made by Polish-born (French-raised) Wladyslaw Starewicz and his wife Irene Starewicz. Say that three times fast! It's an incredible film and very rarely screened. Luckily, I found it broken down into parts on youtube. What a treat!! Wes Anderson pays homage to this film with small references in 'The Fantastic Mr Fox' - another gorgeous film.

I have a pretty solid collection of vintage children's books and nothing makes me happier than a new addition!

Yesterday I happened upon some real gems at a book seller's table in Williamsburg (Brooklyn). This image is from 'The Animals' Boat Ride' - a Rand Mcnally Junior Elf Book. I saw this picture and didn't need to look further, I had to own it. I even waited until I got home to look at the rest. Don't you wish you lived in this world? Which one are you? I am definitely the raccoon.

Here are my two most recent portraits. I really love painting all these furry friends - particularly when the commission involves things I have never really thought to draw before (like civil war uniforms). Ever since I was a kid, I loved the challenge of being told what to draw and running with it. So now I get to research WWII medic tents and fancy yachts and Bruce Springsteen album art. It's pretty wild. Here are the two latest pups.

I really love doing these as they involve animals in clothing (my favorite - particularly if they are playing music) but they are based on real animals with real personalities! NYCares painting party!

I recently volunteered as a mural artist for NYCares and designed a couple of murals for a local school that needed a pick-me-up. Some fantastic friends, a load of volunteers and I painted two murals in an Eastern Brooklyn middle school. It's pretty amazing what people can do with bad brushes and donated paint in a multitude of institutional colors like 'Safety Purple'. It was such a great experience and I can't wait to do it again soon.

I am in the midst of working on illustrating my first book!! Actually, I will be illustrating an entire series of books on children's social and psychological issues, the first of which is on sleeping problems, nightmares, etc. It has been a really fun project thus far and I am so excited to see the first book once it's printed this fall! I can't show any of the images I'm working on until it's published but here is a sketch I won't be using.

Last week I made this 3' x 3' surface for a Plum Workshop photoshoot. I wanted to make it entirely of feathers but had some ethical issues with using real feathers. I decided to make them out of paper. 200+ hand cut feathers later, here's what I ended up with.

I'm pretty happy with the results! Now I can't wait to experiment more with watercoloring the paper beforehand, using different weights and textures, etc. Nerd alert!

I already have one commission to make a wall piece like this one. I love it when an experiment ends better than you had expected!

I never get tired of the incredibly sweet and beautiful "Hedgehog in the Fog". It was made in Moscow in 1975 and it's considered one of the best animated films of all time. I think it's pretty clear why.

I always knew Gigi had great fashion sense, it's just a given. But now even Adrien Brody is catching on to her trend-setting styles. I picked up her sassy bandana (in both blue and red) in a vintage shop in Amsterdam this May but I'm guessing he just got his from some overpriced shop in LA. Either way, they look great together.

Though I may get a dirty look, I am absolutely one of those people that will pick something up off the sidewalk or in the dirt. Not just anything, but something that has a little spark I can't ignore. And sometimes, not all the time, it really pays off.

I have found some real treasure over the years including bird's nests, old letters, patinated keys, photographs, etc. Amongst many other collections, I have been picking up single playing cards off the street and eventually hope to have the whole deck. You wouldn't believe how often there are playing cards lying on the ground. But I only pick up one at a time and just have to hope it's one I need. But that's not the point.

The other day, after a long rain here in Brooklyn, I came upon this innocent little card in a puddle. I loved the simplicity of the lonesome number on that (once) cream card.

Little did I know what was waiting for me on the other side!

The Men About Town! Bob Prince on Vibes! 10 to 2! and for only $1.50, these guys really knew how to throw a party in 1953! I tried to do some research on these Men About Town and all I came up with was a New York Times article from 1911 on the modest beginnings of this Friars Club.

Someone in this family is seeking her fame and fortune and her name is Gingerlee. She was in a photo shoot for Natural Health Magazine on Monday for an article on homeopathic pet treatments and she's in another tomorrow for Everyday with Rachael Ray Magazine. I was hired to sew a dog version of an Elvis costume and they are using her as the model.

Here is my first submission to Illustration Friday, a really awesome site I happened upon a couple months ago. They present a weekly theme and the rest of us respond. This week's theme is 'tales & legends'.

Mine is based on one of my favorite Aesop's Fables about that wily Mr. Fox.

hello again!

It's been a while but I realized that as I haven't updated my website, there's no mention of a new project I recently finished with some friends.

Four of us got together and created a puppet band, John Sloth Jr & the Slows, and went so far as to film a holiday music video for them. Meghan Guthrie and I made the puppets, clothes, props, and sets as well as first-time puppeteering. Joe Pleiman wrote and performed the music, puppeteered and filmed. Evan Sussman puppeteered, filmed and edited our work into movie magic. It was an awesome experience for all of us, we were a perfect team. It was also our first go so we have a lot we want to improve. But check it out below and meet the band!

hello family & friends!

after a long time in the making, my website is finally up and running. i know, i know. the first order of business is just to let everyone know i will have work coming out in two upcoming issues of Real Simple Magazine.

Real Simple Special Family Issue - mid-August 2007: I made a hand sewn doll that is getting a two page spread illustrating an article on common children's ailments.

Real Simple - September 2007: I made 7 custom miniature music box ballerinas that will be illustrating an article on how music affects your emotions.
